Fly balls and tag-ups
After you catch it, runners can take off from their base. Know who is going — and who you can get.
The rule: Catch it first. Then throw to the base the tagging runner is headed to — only if you can beat them.
Tag-up
Once you catch it, runners can run.
They wait on their base, and the moment the ball hits your glove they go. A runner on third on a deep fly ball scores easily — that's a sacrifice fly.
Depth decides
Shallow fly? You can get them.
Catch it running in, throw home on one hop. The runner from third is out at the plate. Two outs on one fly ball.
Deep fly
Deep fly? Don't chase what you can't catch.
Throwing home from the track is hopeless — and the runner on first tags up and moves to second behind your throw. Hit the cut-off instead.
Catch first
The catch is always job one.
You can't throw anyone out if you drop it. Catch it moving toward the base you'll throw to, and get rid of it fast.
You make the call.
Runner on third, one out. Shallow fly to you in right — you catch it on the run. Where is the play?
