The catcher

The only player who sees the whole field — and the last one standing between a runner and a run.

The rule: You see everything, so you call everything. And anything dying in front of the plate is yours.

The general

You see what nobody else can.

Every other fielder faces you. That means every runner, every fielder, the whole play is right in front of you — so the catcher calls it. "FIRST! FIRST!" Your voice tells the fielder where the throw goes.

Every pitch

Nobody touches the ball more than you.

You catch strikes, block balls in the dirt, and keep runners from wandering. A hundred-plus pitches a game end in your glove. Being tough and steady back there is the whole job.

Guard home

Home plate is yours to protect.

Every run has to come through you. With the bases loaded, you have the easiest force in baseball: catch the ball, step on the plate. The run never happens.

Pounce

Bunts and dribblers near the plate — attack them.

Mask off, pounce, fire to first. But be smart: a bunt rolls slow, so the runner ahead is usually safe by the time you grab it. Do not get greedy. Take the out that is still there.

The squeeze is on.

Runner on third breaks for home as the bunt rolls out in front of you. Can you really beat him to the plate? Tap where the throw goes.
