Runner on third, close game. Coach yells "infield in!" Now the play is at home.
The rule: Infield in means the run is the priority. Clean grounder? Throw home.
Infield back
Normally the runner on third just watches.
With the infield playing deep, a ground ball gets thrown to first before the runner could ever make it home. So they stay put. Throwing home gets nobody.
Infield in
Move up, and the throw home gets short.
The coach pulls the infield onto the grass. Now you're close enough to throw home in time — so the runner has to go on contact, and you're expected to get them.
The trade
Playing in, more balls get through.
That's the coach's choice, not yours. Your job: field it clean, come up throwing home, let the catcher make the tag. Bobble it? Then take first — there's no play at home on a late throw.
