On a base hit, jog + scoop = the batter takes second. Charge it hard and come up throwing to second base instead, and the batter stops at first. That quiet play saves runs all game.
Close to the action
Your throws home and to third are short.
Left field is the closest outfield spot to third base and a short throw from home. Runner trying to score from second on a single? In left field, that is YOUR play to make.
Tag-ups
After your catch, the play is not over.
On a deep fly, runners tag up and advance the moment you make the catch. Know before the ball comes down: who is tagging, and which base needs the throw?
