Center field runs fence to gap to gap. Speed and a good first step live here — you are expected to chase down everything hit between the outfielders.
Your call wins
On a fly ball, the center fielder is in charge.
Two outfielders converging on the same ball is how collisions happen. So baseball has a rule: when the center fielder calls it, everyone else peels off. Call it LOUD.
Trust the relay
From deep center, home plate is a long way away.
The throw home from center is one of the longest on the field. Most days the smart play is not the hero throw — it is a hard, low throw to your cut-off man, who fires it wherever it needs to go.
Ahead of the runner
On a single, beat the LEAD runner to a base.
Base hit in front of you with a runner on first: he is rounding second, thinking third. Your throw to a base ahead of him — not behind him — is what stops the extra base.
